MI Features

MI - MPEG-Inspector is a tool for analysing MPEG files. Its usage can save lost time because problems can be recognized and eliminated by oneself or with the help of competent users in video forums.

Most of the MPEG analysing tools, available as shareware or freeware only show partial views from a predefined point of view. One tool shows the arrangement of the frames in
the stream and gives information about bitrates and frame sizes, while another tool gives information about the quantisation-level, and yet another tool gives only global information about the video.

MI offers information about MPEG files at a user-selectable detail level - from a very basic summary only, to a highly detailed bit level analysis of the file being analyzed.
For this MI reads the complete video file or up to wanted point, analyses the content and offers the information for fast access to the details

MI's panel General shows general information, e.g. the format of audio and video and some statistics about the numbers and the spreading of objects across the file.

Panel Frames allows the view to the video from the point of GOPs (Group Of Pictures) and frames in which video and audio are coded. Fast and precise navigation makes detail information of the mouse selected frame accessible and shows the decoded picture.

Panel Details offers the possibility to show elements of the MPEG-stream in alpha-numerical way and the arrangement of these elements within the stream. Which information is to be shown can be selected by various filter criteria. When conducting investigations on this level, knowledge and familiarity of the structure of MPEG-streams (defined by ISO/IEC 13818 Part 1 and 2) is recommended in order to make the information presented by MI useful.

Panel Dump shows selected parts of the MPEG stream in byte level.

All these information are accessible fast and are presented in a logical order. The several panels are synchronized, after switching from e.g. panel Details to panel Dump you will see exact the position which was selected in panel Frames.

A special feature of MI is the possibility to export the complete data of a video to a MIX file. A Mix file contains the videos main data (header information) in compressed form, the video information itself is skipped.

The panel data can be exported into text files from the point of view of several aspects.

Another feature is the possibility of exporting pieces of the video in form of so called Snippets in a very easy way. These snippets can reloaded by MI and analysed again.

With all theses possibilities of exporting analysed results and snippets users can share the information via Internet or by email in a easy manner without need to send complete video files.

Mi isn't at it's final stage of development. Wishes and suggestions are very appreciated by the MI Team. You can find a special section for it in the MIForum.
